HSE University and SAFC Launch Cooperation on Nature and Climate Projects in Kazakhstan

The Сentre of Digital Technologies for Nature-Based Solutions at HSE University and the Kazakhstan-based company SAFC are planning joint work on the implementation of climate projects in Kazakhstan. Specialists from the HSE centre visited the site of the country’s first forest climate project and signed a cooperation agreement with SAFC.
The digital platform for assessing nature and climate projects, developed and maintained by the HSE Сentre of Digital Technologies for Nature-Based Solutions, focuses on ARR (afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation) projects, in particular afforestation and the creation of protective forest belts on agricultural land. The first and currently only project of this kind in Kazakhstan is being implemented by SAFC.
‘We visited the area of the Kapchagay Reservoir. It was here, near the city of Qonaev, that Kazakhstan’s first forest climate project was launched this spring. We inspected the afforestation sites, the drip irrigation system, and the specialised equipment used for the mechanised planting of seedlings under local conditions,’ said Viktor Proskuryakov, Project Manager at the HSE Сentre of Digital Technologies for Nature-Based Solutions.
The HSE Centre of Digital Technologies for Nature-Based Solutions of the Carbon Measurement Supersites Programme was established in 2025 as part of the HSE Faculty of Geography and Geoinformation Technology with the support of the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The centre has developed and continues to develop a digital platform for nature and climate projects that is adapted to Russia’s natural and regulatory conditions and takes international experience into account. The centre’s experts are also engaged in analytical, advisory, and research and educational activities related to various types of nature and climate projects, as well as sustainable agriculture and forestry.
Planting of poplar, elm, apricot, and other tree species was carried out in May 2025, at a density of approximately 2,200 saplings per hectare. Over the coming years, a green area covering 1,500 hectares will be established here, consisting of around 3.5 million trees. In other words, conditions will be created for ecosystem restoration on currently unused and degraded land along the northern shore of the Kapchagay Reservoir. At present, SAFC is preparing the project documentation for registration with the Verra registry, and the forest climate project is being implemented under the VM0047 methodology.
The capabilities of the Russian digital platform for assessing nature and climate projects have attracted the interest of colleagues from Kazakhstan. The parties have signed a cooperation agreement between HSE University and SAFC LLP.
‘It is important for us to have a digital tool for evaluating climate projects. Using the Russian digital platform, we plan to carry out a pilot case to calculate the parameters of our project, with verification of the results based on actual data,’ explained Yuri Kim, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SAFC.
The HSE Сentre of Digital Technologies for Nature-Based Solutions and SAFC also plan to organise joint projects in the interests of Russian companies, as well as visits by their representatives to the SAFC project site to demonstrate the implementation of climate projects and to exchange experience in agroforestry and digital solutions for nature and climate initiatives.
SAFC is engaged in forestry, mixed farming, sustainable land management, and the development of climate projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Kazakhstan. The company was founded in 2022. In 2024, together with its partners, SAFC began implementing Kazakhstan’s first forest climate project on the northern shore of the Kapchagay Reservoir.

In July 2026, the HSE Institute for Robotics Systems hosted a foresight session dedicated to developing an Ethical Standard for Anthropomorphic Robotic Complexes. Representatives from businesses, government bodies, scientific organisations, and universities gathered to discuss key ethical and legal issues surrounding the development of anthropomorphic robotic complexes. The main outcome of the meeting was a draft of the Ethical Standard.

From July 20 to 27, 2026, the HSE Faculty of Urban and Regional Development (FURD) is hosting a summer school for students from Tianjin University dedicated to the preservation of cultural heritage. Throughout the week, participants have attended lectures, practical workshops, and field visits to some of Moscow’s most iconic heritage sites. The summer school is the faculty’s first international programme of this kind and forms part of the expanding educational cooperation between Russia and China.
Physicists at HSE University and FIAN Discover Way to 'Photograph' Sound for Testing Materials Used in 6G Communications
Researchers at HSE University, in collaboration with colleagues from the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FIAN), have developed a method for rapidly determining how firmly a film is bonded to a substrate. This is important for the creation of ultrahigh-frequency acoustic filters, which are key components of next-generation 5G and 6G communications. For the first time, researchers have succeeded in measuring the lateral rigidity of the bond between a two-dimensional material film and a substrate in this way. The study results have been published in Applied Physics Letters.

Biologists Discover Unique Properties of MiR-93-5p MicroRNA in Prostate Cancer
Researchers at the International Laboratory of Microphysiological Systems of the HSE Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology investigated how different isoforms of the same microRNA influence gene function in prostate adenocarcinoma. The study found that in some cases, microRNAs can reinforce each other’s effects by targeting and suppressing the same genes. This finding offers a fresh perspective on the molecular mechanisms underlying tumour development and on the search for disease biomarkers. The results have been published in PeerJ.
Researchers Discover How Spelling Errors Slow Down Reading in Russian
Psycholinguists from the Centre for Language and Brain at HSE University–St Petersburg have shown that words that are frequently misspelled are processed more slowly by readers, even when presented with the correct spelling. The researchers confirmed this effect for the first time using Russian-language materials and found that response speed is most strongly linked to how confidently individuals can distinguish the correct spelling of a word from an incorrect one. The study has been published in The Mental Lexicon.
Scientists Discover Why Europium 'Misbehaves'
Europium is a rare-earth metal responsible for the pure red glow in displays and other luminescent materials. For a long time, however, it refused to emit light when surrounded by certain organic molecules known as acylpyrazolone ligands. Chemists have now uncovered the reason: in europium complexes with these ligands, a 'black window' appears—a charge-transfer state in which the energy absorbed by the ligand is dissipated as heat rather than emitted as light. Understanding this mechanism opens the way to designing more efficient red-emitting materials for displays, fluorescent thermometers, and chemical sensors. The results have been published in Dalton Transactions.
