XIV International Conference on Higher Education Took Place at HSE University
This year’s conference topic was ‘Student Experience at a Modern University: from an Enrollee to a Graduate’. Over the three days, researchers from Russia and other countries discussed the individual and institutional factors that determine students' educational experience, the impact of this experience on educational performance, and its influence on labour market success. The conference took place from October 25–27 and featured over 90 presentations.
Shanghai Ranking Names HSE Top Russian University in 11 Subjects
HSE University is this year’s leading Russian university in 11 subjects in the Shanghai Ranking. In seven of these, the university is the only Russian higher education institution to appear. This year, the university was ranked among the top universities for Communications for the first time and returned to the ranking for Sociology.
‘My Research Has Evolved into A Broader and More Encompassing Vision’
Seungmin Jin, from South Korea, is researching the field of Explainable AI and planning to defend his PhD on ‘A Visual Analytics System for Explaining and Improving Attention-Based Traffic Forecasting Models’ at HSE University this year. In September, he passed the pre-defence procedure at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science School of Data Analysis and Artificial Intelligence. ‘The Trip to India Will Be an Exam for Every Participant’
From October 28 to November 29, 2023, students of HSE University will take part in an international internship at Lovely Professional University (LPU), one of the biggest universities in India. The exchange programme is intended for students of the bachelor’s programme in Media Communications and the master’s programme in Media Production and Media Analysis at HSE University-St Petersburg. The project will culminate in the creation of a documentary film about India, which will be shot jointly by students of HSE University and LPU.
HSE University to Host ‘Fall into ML 2023’ Machine Learning Conference
Machine Learning (ML) is a field of AI that examines methods and algorithms that enable computers to learn based on experience and data and without explicit programming. With its help, AI can analyse data, recall information, build forecasts, and give recommendations. Machine learning algorithms have applications in medicine, stock trading, robotics, drone control and other fields.

Russia is becoming an increasingly popular study destination for African students, and HSE University is actively seeking to attract more students from African countries. Bakary S. Sonko, from Gambia, is a master’s student at the Graduate School of Business and an active member of the volunteering community both at HSE University and beyond. ‘Our University Pays Great Attention to Protecting Cultural and Historical Heritage’
The regional programme of the VI Heritage Youth Forum, co-organised by HSE University, has opened at Durasov House. The goal of the educational project by the Moscow Department of Cultural Heritage is to engage undergraduates, graduate students, and young professionals in work to preserve and integrate cultural monuments into the modern urban space.
HSE Faculty of Computer Science Launches ‘AI in Mathematical Finance’ Laboratory
At the end of September, the HSE University Faculty of Computer Science launched the laboratory ‘Artificial Intelligence in Mathematical Finance’, which brought together more than 70 participants. Representatives of the laboratory told students and staff about the key tasks and goals of the new research department.
